Surfing in Devon & Cornwall

Surfing is the art of sliding along a breaking wave on a board.

There is something special about surfing and everyone who has done it will understand what we are talking about. It feels natural, energy boosting and has a healthly feel to it. When you get out of the surf you feel great!

Being able to swim is a must for this sport as with all water based extreme sports.

There are a few different types of surf boards for different waves and styles of surfing.

  • Short Boards - These are known as 'thrusters' and are used for tricks. Used on all types of surf but, the smaller the wave. the harder they are to catch on this board. This board is for experienced surfers. Length is usally between 6ft and 7ft.
  • Mid Boards - 'Mini Mals'. Not as long as longboards but more manoeuvrable and more stable than 'thrusters'. These boards can catch smaller waves than shorter boards and will be more stable on the bigger waves. Length is usually between 7ft and 9ft.
  • Longboards - 'Mals'  These are the classic boards. They have made a big comeback in the uber cool ranks in the last few years. They can catch any little ripple and are the most stable boards that you can ride. Length is usually 9ft and up.

Cost and Equipment

If you are looking to rent the boards and wet suits, you can expect to pay around £12 for half a day and £20 for the whole day. These many vary from place to place and in different seasons.

Boards  -  A beginner board will be a mini mal or longboard due to them being more stable and start at around £190. The next board up,when you become a better surfer, will be around the £300 mark. When buying, try and get the complete board for the price i.e bag, leash, wax.

Wet Suits  -  When surfing in the UK, we recommend that you only buy a winter wet suit. The sea is never that warm in the UK. Spend no less than £100 for a good wet suit.
